"JCI World President Graham Hanlon, accompanied by JCI Secretary General Edson A. Kodama and JCI Director Edmond Sakai, met with United Nations Foundation (UNF) President Timothy Wirth and his team (Executive Director Elizabeth McKee Gore and Deputy Director Adrianna Logalbo). The meeting took place at the UN Foundation Headquarters in Washington D.C. on March 14, 2008.
The purpose of the meeting was to sign a JCI-UN Foundation Partnership Agreement on bed nets called “Nothing But Nets Campaign.”
What is the UN Foundation?
Created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities, the UN Foundation is a public charity that builds and implements public-private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and broadens support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach.
The UN Foundation strengthens and supports the UN and its causes through advocacy, grant-making, and partnerships.
What is the UN Foundation Nothing But Nets Campaign?
Nothing But Nets is a grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. While the UN Foundation has been working with the UN to fight malaria for years, it was a column written by Rick Reilly about malaria in Sports Illustrated, challenging each of his readers to donate at least $10 for the purchase of an anti-malaria bed net -- and the incredible response from thousands -- that led to the creation the Nothing But Nets campaign.
The reaction to Reilly's 815 words made clear that thousands of people were ready to help the million children dying unnecessarily each year of malaria. Within a few short months, Nothing But Nets raised over 1 million dollars. And so Nothing But Nets was born.
The UN Foundation has now partnered with groups as diverse as Junior Chamber International (JCI), National Basketball Association’s NBA Cares, The People of the United Methodist Church and Sports Illustrated to bring Nothing But Nets to the public. These Partners are joined by corporate, multi-media and financial partners to make a significant impact by raising awareness and funds to purchase and distribute bed nets and save lives.
Why the agreement?
In 2003, JCI adopted the resolution to support the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
In 2004, JCI in Africa and the Middle East decided to focus on projects and activities related to MDGs 1 (Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger) and 6 (Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases).
In 2008, based on MDG 6, JCI and the United Nations Foundation are launching the “JCI Nothing But Nets Campaign” worldwide.
The JCI Nothing But Nets Campaign is one of the top priorities of the 2008 JCI Plan of Action. “It’s a great opportunity to show concrete and tangible results of what JCI worldwide is capable to do aligned with our mission,” said JCI President Hanlon.
To start, JCI is asking all its members to help achieve the goal of donating 5,000 bed nets by May 31, 2008. Donations are expected to increase as the campaign becomes better known. Make a donation now by clicking on http://www.jci.cc/programs/en/jcinothingbutnetscampaign
