JCI Creates a Page for Donations to Tsunami Victims

As part of the JCI Operation Hope project, launched January 1, 2005, JCI Members worldwide are demonstrating great energy, ingenuity and leadership to help their brothers and sisters in need in Southeast Asia. The JCI Headquarters has already created a page where JCI Active Members, Senior Members, Senators and others can donate by credit card to help tsunami victims. The link to this page: http://www.juniorchamber.org/OperationHope

JCI Headquarters Team Members are also preparing a page to provide the copious information received regarding the project. Here are samples of the details that will appear on that page:

From Countries Providing Aid

JCI Singapore Members have created a special web page at http://tsunamiasiarelief.blogspot.com and are already shipping supplies. "There is a 40-foot container fully loaded with fresh water, food, prescription free medical supplies and clothing bound for Sri Lanka on Monday, 3rd January; with at least two more 40 footers expected in subsequent shipments," they reported.

Additionally, long time philanthropist and Patron to JCI Singapore JCI Senator Dato (Dr) Tan Hian Tsin and Datin Tan pledged RM 1,000,000 (SGD4 32,000/US$ 263,000) towards relief efforts to the victims of the devastating tidal waves in Malaysia.

"In an unprecedented move, Dato Tan reveals that he and Datin broke from the usual practice in the past of remaining anonymous whenever they make a charitable contribution in the hope that people who are far wealthier will come forward and give generously to the cause as well," reported JCI Singapore on its Victims Assistance Program website.

From Countries Receiving Aid

The following was received from Darshana Senaratna, 2004 JCI Sri Lanka President:

… We have setup a special committee to coordinate and manage the relief work of JCI Sri Lanka, which consists of the National Organization, Local Organization and Senate Members, including Past President Isfahani [Sameen].

Our members have been visiting the affected areas with relief goods and have been providing us with information regarding the changing needs of different regions affected by the waves. Today we had an emergency meeting with the Committee to decide on JCI aid and other international aid for Sri Lanka and how we could make our efforts more efficient and effective…

We would like to thank all at JCI and all our friends around the world for their concern and assistance at this moment of need…
