Previous Competitions
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has held three highly successful "Focus on Your World" photographic competitions on the environment since 1991, with the generous support of Canon Inc. Generating huge interest among the photographic community and the public in general, each competition has helped increase global public awareness of environmental issues.
JCI as a Partner
In 2004-2005, the fourth Focus on Your World competition, once again sponsored by Canon, will build on an already impressive collection of powerful images documenting the beauty and fragility of the global environment. And this time, JCI is a partner. The name of JCI (Junior Chamber International) appears in all UNEP Photographic Competition promotional and advertising materials.
JCI members are urged to actively take part in the competition by directly entering themselves and by promoting participation from other groups in their respective communities. They need to make sure the public learns about the competition and takes part in it. Promoting this competition will not only improve JCI's standing in the community, but will also contribute to protect the world for our children.
Celebrating Diversity
The theme of the fourth Focus on Your World competition is "Celebrating Diversity." In this age of global communications, we can appreciate as never before the extraordinary diversity of life on this planet. "This new knowledge is a wake-up call that the environmental, cultural and spiritual riches that we often take for granted are disappearing in front of our eyes," says Klaus Toepfer, UNEP Executive Director
Protecting these riches for future generations is a complex undertaking that needs the commitment of governments, non-governmental and international organizations, businesses, communities and individuals. "The challenge for organizations such as UNEP is to inspire and sustain that commitment, to translate the jargon of development into language that is accessible to all," adds Toepfer.
Fujio Mitarai, Canon Inc. President and C.E.O., considers photos a visual statement. "Through sponsoring and supporting the UNEP International Photographic Competition on the Environment since 1991, we at Canon can see just by looking at the subjects captured through the lens that many people around the world pay great attention to environmental problems and are serious in their concern for the future of the earth," states Mitarai.
